Air Purifier Reviews

Levoit LV-H132 (Editor’s Choice)

Compact, well designed and sleek, our editor’s choice, the Levoit LV-H132, is the best air purifier overall. Ideal for any small room, this home air cleaner is packed with all of the essential features that you need for fresher, pure air.

This could be the best dust air purifier, thanks to its three-stage filtration system, a pre-filter, an H13 HEPA filter, and an activated charcoal filter. It can, in fact, remove airborne contaminants as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust, smoke, pet dander and allergens. It has a good CADR of 68m3 per hour, more than enough for your home office or bedroom.

Complete with three fan speeds, including an ultra-low 28dB night-time mode for overnight use, this air purifier also has a handy nightlight. The touch control panel is very intuitive for extra ease of use, while the filter change reminder ensures that you can tell at a glance when you need to replace it.

Bear in mind that, as a fairly compact unit with a 12m2  effective range, this HEPA air purifier may be less suitable for large rooms. Also, while the night light can be disabled, you may wish to cover up the button lights if using it overnight in your bedroom.

  • 3-stage filtration
  • Three fan speeds
  • Touch control panel
  • Filter change reminder
  • Compact, stylish design

  • It may be less suitable for large rooms
  • Lights on buttons may be disturbing at night

Philips Series 2000i (Luxury Choice)

Looking for the best of the very best air purifiers? Treat yourself to our luxury choice, the Philips Series 2000i Air Purifier, certified by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation.

The 2000i is an excellent air purifier machine for large rooms and even whole-home use, with its large 79m2  effective range. Its extra high CADR of 333m3 per hour and five-speed levels mean that it can clean a 20m2 room in just nine minutes. Thanks to its three-layer filtration with pre-filter, NanoProtect HEPA filter and an active carbon filter, this unit can capture up to 99.97% of ultra-fine particles to improve air quality.

One of the best features of the 2000i is its air quality sensor. It scans the air 1000 times per second, displays your room’s air quality and automatically chooses the best speed. You can also operate this air purifier manually via the touch button control panel or using the app. This Philips HEPA air purifier has been designed for continuous use since it is subject to rigorous testing for a long lifespan.

On the downside, based on air purifier reviews, this air purifier could be a little heavy to move around, and the app connection could do with some improvements.

  • Effective range: 79m2
  • CADR: 333m3/h
  • 3-layer filtration system
  • Air quality sensing, app and display
  • Five speeds

  • It could be easier to move around

Designed for use in rooms up to 15m2, it can clean your air in as little as 30 minutes at high speed. Use it on sleep mode overnight in your bedroom and benefit from reduced allergy symptoms with a quiet 28dB noise level. Easy to move and compact by design, this HEPA air purifier is a great model for any small room.

As a budget air purifier, this model may not be the most durable. Also, it may not work with smart plugs, so if you’re looking to control your air purifier remotely, you may be better off with another model.

  • Effective range: 15m2
  • 3-stage filtration
  • 2-in-1 air purifier & aroma diffuser
  • Three speeds
  • Easy one-button control

  • It could be more durable

Use it with the smartphone app to remotely set a schedule or timer and ensure that you come home to a fresh-smelling, allergen-free home.

While this is an excellent air purifier, it could be improved with the addition of an air sensor for automatic air purification. Also, the carbon air filter could do with a little improvement for better odour removal.

  • Effective range: 35m2
  • 4-speed levels
  • CADR: 170m3/h
  • Touch control panel & app
  • Alexa & Google Assistant compatible

  • It may lack a sensor
  • The carbon filter could also be improved

ProBreeze 5-in-1 (Best Quiet)

The ProBreeze 5-in-1 air purifier is our best quiet pick, given its Quiet Mark certification and excellent purification capabilities. Take advantage of its low noise levels and use it in your bedroom, office or living room for minimal disturbance and fresh, clean air.

Its advanced four-stage filtration system ensures that 99.97% of fine airborne particles are removed, including mould, dust, VOCs and formaldehyde.

This air purifier also has an independently controlled negative ion generator to help ensure a cleaner, healthier environment. Negative ions bind to pollutants, neutralising them for a cleaner environment. The ProBreeze 5-in-1 air purifier is an excellent quiet choice with a highly effective air purification design.

Its H13 true HEPA filter removes even tiny 0.3-micron particles, including pet dander, bacteria, pollen and viruses.

Importantly, this model features an auto-sensing mode that gives you real-time readings of your room’s air quality and automatically adjusts its operation for the best performance. Control your indoor air quality from anywhere via the app, or use the sleek touch control panel to manually configure your settings.

On the downside, this air cleaner machine could be improved by adding castor wheels as it can be a little awkward to move from room to room. Also, the unit’s base could be better designed to ensure that it remains tight fitting.

Our top pick for the best air purifier for allergies in the UK benefits from a special triple compound filter that removes 99% of airborne allergens, including dander, pollen, VOCs and smoke, thanks to its activated carbon filter and HEPA filters.

The Silentnight 38060 air purifier has three-speed settings, including a low-volume sleep setting for bedroom use. Given its low price and the comparatively low cost of replacement filters compared to other models, the 38060 makes a great bargain buy for any small room around your home, providing effective allergy relief.

While by no means a deal-breaker, unfortunately, this model’s design could be significantly improved and updated. Also, bear in mind that with a usable area of 5-8m2, this air purifier may not be suitable for medium or large rooms in your home.

  • Triple compound filter
  • 3-speed settings
  • Timer & ioniser feature
  • Night mode
  • Low-cost replacement filters

  • The usable area may be too small

It is also very quiet at its slowest speed at just 17dB for minimal distraction when working or sleeping.

Thanks to its one-button operation, this air purifier is very easy to use. Its triple-layer air filter system includes an H12 HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter to remove microparticles for pure air. Complete with two fan speeds, night light and a built-in negative ioniser, this air purifier could be your best pick if you have small rooms and are on a tight budget.

How Do Air Purifiers Work?

Air purifiers use a fan to displace air, causing air from your room to enter the unit. This air is then forced through a filter that captures any pollutants. The clean, filtered air is then expelled from the unit. This process is continued resulting in indoor air that is pollutant-free.

Your air purifier filter may be able to remove large particles such as pet fur and dust particles. HEPA filters (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) are essential for removing ultra-fine particles, including viruses, volatile organic compounds, mould spores and bacteria. Some air filters, activated charcoal versions, in particular, are also able to remove odours, gases and other air pollutants. Air purifiers are fantastic appliances to improve indoor air quality levels.

What Is CADR?

CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate. It measures your air purifier’s effectiveness at removing pollutants. CADR is measured in metres cubed per hour, and it can be used to work out how quickly your air purifier can clean all of the air in your room.

HEPA air purifiers with higher CADR numbers will be more efficient than ones with lower numbers. CADR figures can be measured using figures for removing large, medium and ultra-fine particles from the air, or your air purifier may use an average of these three figures.

If your air purifier manufacturer gives you a breakdown of the individual CADR figures, we recommend concentrating on the 0.3-micron figure as these ultra-fine contaminants are most easily inhaled and deposited in the lungs.

How to Choose the Best Air Purifier

With so many models to choose from, finding the best HEPA air purifier in the UK for your needs can be a little tricky. Here are some of the essential air purifier features you’ll want to focus on when making your final choice.

Choosing an air purifier with an adequate range is essential to ensuring that your air purifier will be able to effectively remove air pollutants from your home.

Your air purifier’s effective range will be measured in metres squared, which should be at least equal to the size of your room.

Some air purifiers have very small ranges, around 10m2; these models are best suited to very small rooms. Larger, more powerful air purifiers will have larger ranges, with some going up to around 80m2 – ideal for large, open-plan homes.

As we discussed earlier, the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate)is an important measurement that puts a figure on your air purifier’s effectiveness at removing airborne pollutants. You will want to pay close attention to both the range and CADR together.

The best air purifiers will have a large range and a high CADR to quickly and efficiently remove particles from your air for rapid relief from allergy symptoms and a fresher smelling, cleaner room in next to no time.

Air purifiers with a lower CADR and a smaller range than the size of your room will struggle to effectively clean all of the air of contaminants and will need to be run for much longer to achieve any results.

Filter Composition

The best air purifiers have at least three-layer filtration systems. Pre-filters are essential for removing large particles such as dust and pet fur. They can usually be vacuumed clean in between replacements.

A HEPA filter is essential for removing small airborne particles, including pet dander, viruses, mould spores, pollen and bacteria. Aside from a true HEPA filter, you’ll also want to look out for air purifiers with activated carbon filters. Activated carbon filters are the best option to remove smoke particles, gases and odours for pure air.

Speed Levels

Most air purifiers will have at least three fan speed settings. High-speed settings cause the fan to turn more quickly for faster purification rates and improved indoor air quality. However, higher speed levels can be fairly noisy, so you may wish to drop to lower fan speed levels after an initial boost to quickly clear the air.

Premium air purifiers may have four or five fan speed settings, enabling you to better balance noise and efficiency. While lower levels tend to be less effective, you may prefer to drop your purifier down to its lowest setting for minimal distraction if you are working, sleeping, or watching TV.

Night Mode

For bedroom use or if you are a very light sleeper, air cleaner sleep modes can be invaluable. Aside from providing you with a whisper-quiet operation, the best air purifiers with a night mode will also dim or switch off their lights when activated.

Always double check your air purifier’s dimensions before buying. Even desktop models with small ranges still tend to be quite bulky. Models for whole homes or large rooms will, understandably, be even bigger. So make sure you are aware of your air purifier’s size and have considered your placement options before making your final decision.

Auto Mode

We highly recommend choosing an air purifier with an auto mode function. This will allow you to simply set up your air purifier and then leave it to monitor your room’s air quality.

Auto-sensing models automatically adjust their settings to ensure that your indoor air is kept free from air pollutants, improving air purity automatically.

If possible, look for a model that displays your air quality — as a numerical readout or via a coloured indicator. This allows you to keep an eye on your device’s effectiveness and easily monitor air quality levels to ensure they are safe for yourself and your family.

Make sure that your air purifier has easy to use controls. Most will benefit from a touch button or control panel system. If you have a smart home, check that your air purifier is compatible. Not all air purifiers are compatible with smart plugs so you may need to pay more for a connected model.

Purchasing a connected air purifier with an app means that you can control your air purifier anywhere as long as you have internet access. A mobile application is also a great way to keep track of how your air purifier is functioning and check up on your filter lifespan, and setting schedules.

Additional Air Purifier Features

Some of the following additional extra features can be useful to have, depending on your needs and preferences:

  • Timer – timers are useful extra features, especially on non-connected models, allowing you to set your air purifier to run for a set number of hours.
  • Night light – if you are using your air purifier in your bedroom or in a child’s bedroom, a night light can provide a nice relaxing low-level light.
  • Aroma diffuser – some air purifiers also have an aroma diffuser allowing you to add essential oils to gently fragrance your home’s fresh air.
  • Negative ioniser – negative ionisers release negative ions that can help remove indoor pollution and small particles in the air and neutralise bacteria, moulds, and viruses.
